The University of California, Berkeley, and South Dakota School of Mines and Technology are well along in preparing a design plan for a fully developed lab, a mile below the earth’s surface. “These designers are asking, how do we get the utilities and lighting we need down there, and how do we ensure safety and the right settings for experiments?” says Ron Wheeler, South Dakota Science and Technology Authority executive director.
